My sister @akbarnavila helped me put together a new classroom so we can continue Sunday school this fall while over half the rooms are being repaired after the flood damage. Welcome to St. Aidan’s class! St. Aidan was a teacher of children and kings and was known for his humility and generosity. I’m adding a banner on virtues and some bees (you’ll understand when I show you!) soon. I brought the #childrenofjoy to Vespers today, and they loved building little huts and playing with the silks and fan. #accessiblechurchschool #sensoryfaith #handsonsundayschool #westernrite #staidansclass #orthodoxkids #sensoryanchorsundayschool #sensoryanchor #accessibility #accessiblefaith

I love it when the kids play their guitars. #kidmusician #electricguitar
My husband and I recently signed up to be novice Benedictine oblates (he’s already one; I am going to be official on the feast day later this month). Usually I sing psalms for prayer walks, but the Western Rite rosary was perfect for my laryngitis, still winded from last month’s Covid self. I whispered the prayers along the prairie and over the water lilies. The prayers awakened compassion and mercy in me that I can’t describe. #prayer #rosary #rosarywalk #westernrite
It’s the Dormition Fast! Need a little extra to get you by? In honor of Our Lady, I’m mailing a $25 Target gift card to the first four people who tell me they need one. #dormitionfast
I taught my son to bake gluten-free and dairy-free scones. He’s getting quite good! They were perfect for after church tea. #tea #scones (This fall I’m reissuing my novel that includes the recipe!)
The little kids who were able to attend my grandmother’s funeral were a bright spot in a sad, long day. I brought a church bag, and it supplied them with the model magic, pop up book, dolls, and paint with water rosary cards that helped them through. It was 105F in the shade when we buried my grandmother, but I am so glad that so many of us could go with her to the end of her journey, as my Uncle Larry said at the graveside. I have a little spot in the family plot that was reserved when I was a little girl, so I took a moment to stand on my grave and reflect on our way out. The only thing that makes sense is love.
Tonight I bought flowers to put on the family graves tomorrow when we bury my dear grandmother. She’s being buried a day before the ten year anniversary of my dad’s death. As I said to my Aunt Pam, I hope they are all hugging necks again on God’s front porch, where the bread of life tastes like banana pudding.
Every now and then the rain and the shadows of the willows make our little kitchen window seem portentous.
